Sebuah apel, akan membuat dokter menjauh. Pepatah lama itu lahir bukan tanpa arti. Sesungguhnya kandungan gizi setiap jenis apel berbeda-beda. Ada sekitar 7000 jenis apel di seantero dunia. Khasiatnya pun beragam. Namun sejauh ini ilmuwan mengetahui bahwa kandungan kalium atau potassium membuah buah ini mampu mencegah stroke, mengurangi kadar gula dan kolesterol darah. Satu hal yang bermanfaat bagi penderita kencing manis serta jantung koroner.
Makin merah warna apel, makin tinggi zat kalium yang dikandung. Kalium ini adalah jenis mineral yang mampu mengatur detak jantung. Dengan kondisi itu maka tekanan darah ikut teratur pula.
Selain itu buah apel juga bisa diolah menjadi cuka sari apel yang bersifat anti septik yang mampu membunuh bakteri-bakteri dalam saluran pencernaan, memperbaiki metabolisme tubuh, memperlancar aliran darah untuk mengatasi toxeemia alias keracunan dalam peredaran darah dan mencegah obesitas. Selain itu juga terdapat kandungan karotenoid yang merupakan sumber vitamin A, berfungsi meningkatkan daya tahan tubuh.
Bernama latin Malus domestica, apel masuk dalam famili rosaceae. Tinggi pohonnya antara 5-12 meter. Buahnya bulat, berwarna antara merah dan hijau. Walau sudah menyebar ke seluruh negara, asal-muasal buah ini ternyata dari Kazakhstan. Di sana buah ini dikenal dengan nama alma.
Kebanyakan orang mengonsumsi apel secara langsung begitu saja. Ada juga yang suka mengolahnya menjadi jus, sirup atau perasa tambahan. Ada juga yang mengolah apel menjadi cuka. Cuka apel ini merupakan sumber serat terlarut paling baik, yang tak mengandung kolesterol,lemak, dan natrium. Kandungan pektin efektif menekan kolesterol jahat penyumbat pembuluh darah (LDL) dan meningkatkan kadar kolesterol baik (HDL) tinggi, sehingga mengurangi risiko terserang penyakit jantung.
Cuka apel tak berefek samping bila dikonsumsi berlebihan. Sebab, darah resisten terhadap asam. Kelebihan asam akan dibuang. Sebaliknya, darah reaktif terhadap basa. Artinya pH darah akan naik bila terdapat gizi yang bersifat basa. Kondisi darah cenderung basa memudahkan tubuh terserang penyakit.(berbagai sumber/mer)
